Growing with My Garden

Have you ever wanted to try something new in your garden? For me, that was growing some vegetables. I know, I know… most of you have been growing vegetables for years! I’ve grown rhubarb before and I have also grown strawberries, but that’s about it. I would have tried much sooner, but I don’t have the right kind of soil, nor is it deep enough, to grow picky vegetables. I mostly stuck with native perennials that didn’t need a lot of special care. But this year I thought I’d give it a try. I bought some large planters, filled it with good soil and found some varieties of tomatoes and bell peppers that stayed small and compact.

I’m excited to say that I’ve picked my very first tomatoes! They’re not very pretty, but they were grown in my yard! Apparently, I need to pay a little more attention to my watering. What do you think? I guess I’m just used to my perennials. They only need the occasional watering during a dry spell and they’re good to go. These vegetables are a little more fussy, especially the tomatoes! If you have some tips for me, I’d love to hear them!

My bell peppers are getting bigger.

My bell peppers aren’t ready to pick yet. I did try them last summer, but I only got one lonely pepper off of the plant. I did manage to save the seeds from it though. The seeds took and this year, I have more peppers on my plant! I’m watering them more, so I hope I get a nice crop of them. So far, so good. Next summer, I’d like to expand. Maybe I’ll build a raised bed….

Do you have some suggestions on some easy vegetables that you think I should try? What are your favorite vegetables to grow? Happy gardening! 🙂
